• You must complete all online content on the U.S. Soccer Learning Center at least 24 hours prior to the start of the classroom session of the course (note: online content can take between 4-6 hours to complete). This includes a cleared Background Check (this can take 2-3 weeks to complete, so plan ahead) and Safe Sport modules for those who are 18 or older.
• Registration for the course closes 1 week prior to the classroom session meeting date. If a minimum number of attendees have not signed up, the course may be canceled. In this case, registrants will be given the option to transfer to another course or receive a refund.

Assistant Referee Movement

Information

This session focuses on the movement and positioning of assistant referees as part of the U.S. Refereeing Way.

Using match footage and practical examples, the session will explore how assistant referees move and position themselves to support accurate decisions during active phases of play. Discussion will focus on maintaining alignment with the second to last defender, movement during transitions, and positioning that supports offside decisions and incidents in the penalty area.

Particular attention will be given to awareness, communication with the referee, and the role assistant referees play in supporting key decisions during the match.

The aim is to support assistant referees in developing strong movement habits so they remain well positioned to recognize and assist with important decisions throughout the game.

This session focuses on managing the technical area as part of the U.S. Refereeing Way.

Using match footage and real match scenarios, the session will explore how referees manage behavior from coaches and team officials during the game. Discussion will focus on preventative communication, setting clear expectations, and recognising when intervention is required.

Particular attention will be given to maintaining control of the match environment while managing technical area behavior in a calm and professional manner.

The aim is to support referees in applying clear and confident management of the technical area throughout the match.
