The purpose of the Referee Re-certification course is to prepare returning Referees to work in a competitive, small-sided or recreational youth and amateur adult matches. All Referee licenses are active January 1st to December 31st of each year and must be renewed every year.

To receive your 2025 Referee badge, all of the requirements must be met by June 15, 2025.

Background Check

All U.S. Soccer Referees over the age of 18 who undergo licensure through the U.S. Soccer Learning Center must complete the U.S. Soccer-designated background screening every 2 years. The designated background screening vendor is JDP.

Re-certifying Referees must complete registration through the U.S. Soccer Learning Center and must satisfactorily complete the following assignments:

  • Online Referee Course Module – 4.5 hrs.
  • Re-certifying Referee Quiz – 45 mins.
  • Laws of the Game Update – 20 mins.
  • Introduction to Safe and Healthy Playing Environments – 1 hr.
  • SafeSport (if 18 years or older) – 1 hr.
  • U.S. Soccer Federation JDP Background Check (if 18 years or older)

For re-certifying referees that complete all of the above requirements prior to December 31 for the next year, badges will be mailed prior to the end of the year. Any re-certifying referee that completes all requirements after December 31, badges will be mailed on a bi-monthly basis.

Note: All requirements must be completed by June 15 in the year the referee wishes to maintain their referee license or their registration will be canceled and if the course paid for, no refund will be issued.

All Referees must complete an annual recertification.  Recertification courses are accessible through the US Soccer Learning Center.

Online Recertification Courses

Recertification courses are offered online from July through June.  Referees must realize that their License EXPIRES annually on JANUARY 1st.

Once a license has expired, a referee may not officiate any match until they have completed their recertification requirements.
